Introduction
Before George Jones became closely linked with Tammy Wynette, he had already built another strong duet partnership with Melba Montgomery.
“Let’s Get Together (One More Time)” came from that earlier chapter. Jones and Montgomery recorded the song in Nashville in 1966, with Pappy Daily producing. Written by Don Chapel, it later appeared on their 1967 album Let’s Get Together, also released under the title Party Pickin’.
By then, the two singers had already developed a natural chemistry. Their voices were very different, but that contrast worked in their favor. Jones brought the ache and tension, while Montgomery answered with a clear, direct country delivery that never sounded overwhelmed by him.
Background
The song itself lives in familiar country territory: two people looking back at a relationship and wondering whether there is still enough left to try again. That “one more time” in the title matters. It suggests history. These are not two people falling in love for the first time. They sound like people who already know what went wrong, already know the risks, and still feel tempted to come back. That kind of story suited Jones especially well.
His later duets with Tammy Wynette became more famous, but the recordings with Melba Montgomery deserve their own place in his career. They show that Jones had already learned how powerful a country duet could be when both singers sounded like they were living inside the same argument. “Let’s Get Together (One More Time)” is a good example of that chemistry: no big production, no complicated idea, just two voices carrying a story about regret, memory, and another chance.

🎵 Let’s sing along with the lyrics! 🎤
Well, it’s true, that we just can’t live together
For your hunger and my heart don’t agree
So, let’s celebrate our party with a party
Let’s get together before we go, our separate waysLet’s get together just one time, once again
To cover up the beginning, of the end
And though, we both have agreed, to disagree
Let’s get together one more time, then we’ll be freeI’ll pick you up same place, same time as always
Don’t be late, for this is our last date
We’ll have tonight to remember yesterday
Let’s get together before we go, our separate waysLet’s get together just one time, once again
To cover up the beginning, of the end
And though, we both have agreed, to disagree
Let’s get together one more time, then, we’ll be freeLet’s get together one more time, then, we’ll be free
